Dunheved Golf Club

dunhevedDunheved Golf Club is a private 65 hectare, 18 hole golf course located in St Marys, 50 kilometres west of Sydney. In 2000, a new scheme was commissioned that recycles effluent from Sydney Water’s St Marys sewage treatment plant via a 1.1 kilometres long pipeline to irrigate the club’s greens. On average, the club now uses 350,000 litres of recycled water every day, while the systems maximum capacity is one million litres per day.

Previously, the golf club relied on water from nearby South Creek. However, water extraction by other users upstream and reduced flows in the creek in times of drought made this water supply unreliable. Substituting it with recycled water means that the club now enjoys access to reliable, unrestricted water, which reduces the demand for precious drinking water and is of particular importance during long dry periods such as the severe drought of 2002-03. As an added environmental benefit, the amount of treated effluent returned to Ropes Creek from the St Marys plant is also reduced.
